Speak the Truth

White Bear Lake Area High School students and dramatic artists Sanyu Mwassa and Mariam Elias-Danjuma together with Mahtomedi student and visual artist Toluwalase Akintola join the AHHA! artists to discuss how their work speaks to the lived experiences of Black Americans, yesterday and today.

Sanyu will present her dramatic interpretation of Billie Holiday from the play Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill, and Mariam will portray Celie from Alice Walker’s book, The Color Purple. Their presentations together with works from student artist Toluwalase and AHHA! artists Beverly Tipton Hammond, A. Drew Hammond, Kennedy Simpson, and Donald Walker create the framework for a discussion among the artists, and an opportunity for a deep conversation with audience members on the ways in which art speaks the truth.

Presentation begins at 7:00PM.
